Vibrant & Welcoming: Point Breeze Whole Home Remodel
Project Details
This 1910 Dutch Colonial Whole Home Remodel in Pittsburgh’s Point Breeze neighborhood transformed a historic home into a modern, functional, and cohesive multi-generational living space. The renovation, which included both the main house and guest house, focused on enhancing openness, functionality, and connection, while preserving the home’s original charm.
The main house was gutted to create an open-concept kitchen and dining area that fostered natural light and easy access to the guest house. The previously cramped kitchen was replaced with a mudroom, featuring custom cabinetry, an arched door, and large windows that allowed light to flow into the home. The removal of the chimney and staircase in the center of the existing room provided space for the creation of an open-concept kitchen and dining area. One of the challenges of the renovation was integrating a powder room on the first floor, which was resolved by creatively shifting the layout to maintain a spacious, intentional flow.
The second and third floors were reconfigured to include two new bedrooms, a full bath, and a luxurious primary suite. The living room was reimagined with bold colors, custom built-ins, and a cozy reading nook, creating a space that complemented the client's extensive art collection.
The guest house was also renovated to align with the aesthetic of the main house. The kitchen was gutted, and new bathroom and laundry areas were added. The color palette and design details were carried over from the main house to ensure a seamless connection between the two spaces. The design choices throughout both structures reflected the client’s style, with vibrant pops of color and modern finishes, such as quartz countertops, mechanized window treatments, and spa-like bathroom features. The new pre-finished hardwood flooring in both spaces tied them together, blending historical elements with contemporary updates.
The result is a beautifully unified home that meets the needs of a modern family while celebrating the home’s historical character, providing a welcoming and functional space for both daily life and entertaining.
